Everything working great but GPS...

Post by simmo512 »

Hi,

Would like to start by thanking you for making Vistumbler freely available, its much appreciated! :D

I'm running Vista on an Acer laptop and everything works fine with Vistumbler 8.0 apart from the GPS.

I downloaded Netcomm OCX from the suggested URL and it seemed to install wthout an issue.

I believe my Navibe GM720 USB GPS receiver is working correctly via its USB cable as it seems to test OK with GPSdiag showing me the GPRMC, GPGCA & GPGSA. If I set the same COM port and Baud rate as used by GPSdiag I'm unable to get any GPS info into Vistumbler. I've also tried the three different GPS format types supported by Vistumbler.

This is the "Received data" I get from GPS diag on COM7, 9600 baud.

$GPRMC,142310.000,A,5339.6475,N,00143.5600,W,0.13,,210708,,,A*60
$GPGGA,142311.000,5339.6469,N,00143.5593,W,1,05,2.2,138.6,M,47.9,M,,0000*44
$GPGSA,A,3,15,17,09,12,05,,,,,,,,3.8,2.2,3.1*36
$GPRMC,142311.000,A,5339.6469,N,00143.5593,W,0.26,,210708,,,A*63
$GPGGA,142312.000,5339.6470,N,00143.5595,W,1,05,2.2,138.9,M,47.9,M,,0000*46
$GPGSA,A,3,15,17,09,12,05,,,,,,,,3.8,2.2,3.1*36
$GPRMC,142312.000,A,5339.6470,N,00143.5595,W,0.00,,210708,,,A*6A

Can you please suggest if I'm doing something wrong or if I need to alter something.
Is there a way for me to test Netcomm OCX in case this is the issue?

Thanks in advance

Have you tried using CommMG instead of Netcomm OCX. Some people have had trouble with netcomm (http://forum.techidiots.net/forum/viewt ... p?f=8&t=64). I prefer netcomm because I can unplug the GPS while its being used without the program crashing, i have yet to figure out how to do that with CommMG.

Go to (Settings --> GPS Settings) and use CommMG instead of Netcomm OCX

Hi, I did try CommMG but it just hung Vistumbler altogether and wouldn't even die, forced me to reboot.

What I've just done is found an old PalmOne PR-230 Bluetooth GPS receiver that came with a TomTom Sat Nav solution for an old Treo 650. This has worked first time with Vistumbler, so I'm up and running with GPS. :D

As Vista/GPSdiag can access the Navibe I'm very suspicious of Netcomm OCX. I've tried an uninstall / reinstall of it but no change. I'm very interested to try another application that uses it and also GPS just to prove its that layer thats at fault. Can anyone think of one?

I've used the Navibe under Linux successfully but never XP, I'll give that a go too as that way Netcomm is taken out of the equation too.

I am really impressed with Vi Stumbler and that its free makes even more impressive so full marks. I have a similar problem with a Sony Vaio laptop running Vista Ultimate. Everything works fine but the GPS. I have installed Netcomm OCX and No problems, but I cannot get it to communicate with my HTC TYTNII (O2 Xda Steller) smartphone with GPS and Windows mobile 6. I have tried setting the comms to Com9 with a 4800 BPS but to no avail. It just wont work. It should because in the documentation says that it will work with external devices, but it doesn't with me. Is there anyone out there who has succeeded using this combination, or has an idea what I am doing wrong.
