Wireless N?

Post by madtwn »

First off, thank you so much for building this! It's a great app.

I'm still getting my feet under me when it comes to wireless technology. I recently purchased 2 new laptops with wireless n cards, one for the wife and one for me. I also picked up a linksys wrt350n which is also wireless n capable.

Lately I have been having been seeing a llot of dropped connections with just one laptop (mine of course, wife's fine). So I have been digging into how this wifi stuff works to see if I can figure out what's up. I found out how to netsh today and then stumbled into your application. I had netstumbler on my old xp laptop.

One quick question, when I use Vistumbler v7.4 beta, the radio type for my network says Wireless G. I was wondering if that means my router is in G mode instead of N? Or does this application doesn't see the difference between G and N? I check my router and it's still set to Network Mode: Wireless-N only?

If you need a beta tester using a Wireless-N network, please let me know. I'm an IT Project Manager (dev web apps) so I have plenty of experience with testing and would be happy to help.

Thanks again for building the app!

I think this is a netsh thing. I don't have a N card so i don't know for sure, but according to this post netsh does display wireless g for wireless n networks. http://forums.cnet.com/5208-7589_102-0. ... ID=2684597

the other possibility is that if you have a built in g card it may be using that to get information from.

As far as I have seen, Wireless-N networks have shown up in Vistumbler as Wireless-G networks.
If you look at the info below, I was useing a Linksys USB wireless-N card, and NetSH polled the SSID 'oswifi' and 'osguest' as 802.11g and as you can see by the attached screenshot I was connected at 802.11n speeds

Code: Select all
