Re: Realtek RTL8187 connectivity

Thank you, Andrew!

For WiFi at 2.4 ghz, use a can 3.25" (82.6 mm) diameter. The bandwidth of the can is related to the diameter. A 3.25" diameter has the 2.4 ghz WiFi band centered in it's bandwidth. I used two 27 oz white bean cans.

There are directions on the other details here:

Re: Realtek RTL8187 connectivity

I need to do a little painting first. Will take a pic.

Right now my other cantenna, the one with the USB stick stuck directly into the can, is over at my neighbors. Last Friday (always this before a weekend, huh?) tree trimmers from the county came through and cut the phone line going to my next ...

Re: Realtek RTL8187 connectivity

Thanks, AC... went to that Majorgeeks site, downloaded the 1221 version. I had found that before but hesitated to try it as it did not have a Vista driver in the folder. Having nothing to lose, I tried it anyway.

I went into Device Manager, right clicked on my Realtek 8187 USB adpt, chose Uninstall ...

Realtek RTL8187 connectivity

I have built two "Cantennas", I mean, "Waveguides". One has just a slot cut in it with a D-Link WUA-2340 USB wifi adapter stuck in, and it works surprisingly well. Similar to this: http://aircrack-ng.org/doku.php?id=cantenna_directional_antenna_with_gain

The other waveguide is constructed with an N ...

Re: Misreads MAC Address

Ahh, makes sense. I was just comparing what ViStumbler listed vs what I was reading off the label of these D-Link routers.

Re: Misreads MAC Address

Vistumbler reports the last two characters of my work router's MAC address as E4. The actual MAC ends in E5. (The rest of the characters is correct.)

Re: different adapters

Update - Andrew, I did just that, moving the USB adapter up, so that it would be the primary adapter when plugged in, and then laptop would fall back to the built in adapter when the USB was unplugged, but that didn't work for me. It is easy enough to just disable it.

Re: different adapters

To clarify, it wasn't enough to just turn off my laptop's internal card with the switch. It was necessary to disable in Device Manager to get Vistumbler to work with the external USB wireless adapter.

Misreads MAC Address

I know the IP of my wireless router. Vistumbler misreads the last digit, reporting it as 06 instead of 07. Could it be making similar mistakes on the other AP's it picks up?

Edited to add: I had a brain glitch... I meant to say, Vistumbler misreads the MAC address. Sorry for the confusion.

Re: different adapters

I just downloaded and began using Vistumbler. I want to use it both with my laptop's built in wireless card, as well as a "cantenna" I have that uses a USB wireless adapter inserted into the can (which works well by the way).

At first Vistumbler only worked with the built in wireless card. Then I ...
